How the pitch multiplier calculator works
Where the factor comes from
Pitch (rise/12) defines a right triangle; the multiplier is its hypotenuse ratio: √(1 + (pitch/12)²). The table barely changes at low pitches (4/12: 1.054) and dominates at steep ones (12/12: 1.414). It converts between the footprint you measure and the surface you buy for — one multiplication, applied to every roofing estimate in existence.
What pitch decides beyond area
Pitch drives material legality (shingles need ≥2/12 with special underlayment, membranes below), walkability (6/12 is the professional comfort line), labor cost (steep = staging and pace), and even style (colonials run 8–12/12, ranches 4–6). The multiplier is the math; the pitch itself is the design decision.
Measuring pitch safely
From the attic: hold a level against the rafter, measure 12" along it, and measure down to the sheathing — that drop is the rise. From a ladder at the rake: same trick on the fascia. No roof walking required — the attic method is safer and equally accurate.
